Summary Description

The Benefits Manager is responsible for analyzing and administering market competitive employee benefit programs, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, life, disability insurance plans and 401(k), retirement / pensions, etc. Other responsibilities also include maintaining compliance with all legal requirements of various employee benefit programs. This position is critical in managing various carrier and vendor relationships and assists with employee insurance benefit inquiries and claims resolution issues.

The Benefits Manager is also responsible for / point of contact for educating human resources personnel or employees about benefits packages and works closely with HR Ops & HRIT to administer leaves of absences and other related programs e.g. benefits enrollment system.

Key Results

  • Ensure Compliance with Federal and State Laws, including but not limited to COBRA, HIPPA, FMLA, ACA, etc.

  • Customer Service to key stakeholders (internal and external)

  • Management of vendor relationships and contractual service level agreements

  • Supports the design, plan and execution/implementation of ongoing benefit plans & programs

Key Accountabilities /Job Duties

  • Responsible for providing day to day direction to the benefit team or outsourced service center. Assists employees with escalated and/or more complex benefit issues; develops effective solutions and options

  • Analyses and administers the various company-wide employee benefit strategy and supporting programs; selects and supervises benefits providers, consultants, and brokers.

  • Actively participates in the design and testing of the enrollment system, the Open Enrollment process, and new HRIS system.

  • Analyzes, develops and administers one or more benefit programs; consults with and advises employees on eligibility for health/welfare plans, disability plans, wellness plans, other benefits, amounts of coverage and claims procedures.

  • Works with Legal and Finance departments in selection and oversight of trustees and provides legal assistance, as needed. Ensures compliance with all legal and external reporting requirements of various employee benefit programs.

  • Acts as liaison and supports interfacing with Safety, Workers’ Compensation, Pension and Payroll programs regarding issues that overlap different programs.

  • Monitor and oversee all employee enrollment processes; including annual Open Enrollment. Approves and ensures timely and accurate payment of all billing invoices related to benefits

  • Recommends new and/or improved employee benefit plans and cost-saving measures; manages the ongoing effort to determine and maintain equity with current benefit trends and legislated requirements and programs.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experiences

  • Minimum of 5 years prior experience in day to day administration of benefit plans required. Additional 2-3 years’ experience required in a fast paced, complex environment.

  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience involving frequent management of projects from start to finish

Skill Sets

  • Proven attention to detail and accurate/timely deliverables an absolute must.

  • Maintains benefit records and prepares communications

  • Plans and processes documents as necessary for benefit plans

  • Ability to multi-task and organize self

  • Ability to manage multiple high priority assignments concurrently

  • Proven problem solving skill and above average analytical skill

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Time management skills required

  • Strong communication skills

  • Exceptional numbers and basic math skill.

  • Excel skills required to be above average.

  • Strong vendor management skills to complete projects accurately and on time and take action as needed

  • Proven ability to follow up, follow through, and close out deliverables independently

  • Above average technical aptitude
